Meet The Founder

Isis Semaj-Hall AKA the Riddim Writer, is a Jamaican scholar and an experimental dub artist with a creative practice (which ranges from dub remixing to music production/composition to songwriting and poetry) that is nurtured by sound, grounded by folk wisdom, and inspired by and in service to our natural environment.

“With our colonial legacy of poor environmental stewardship and our climate vulnerability as a small island state, Jamaica’s natural environment – from river to sea, from mountain to mangrove, and from coast to coast – is under severe threat of silencing. As a sound gallery, Listen Jamaica is art meets archival work meets activism because I recognize that habitat loss also means loss of birdsong, more droughts mean quieter rivers, and the felling of trees means less rustling of leaves and whistling of winds. We must preserve and protect today’s sounds before they fade to silence.” – The Riddim Writer
